Europeans originally settled the lovely town of Franklin in 1660 under the name of Exeter. In honor of Benjamin Franklin, the town was renamed at the time of its incorporation in 1778. Franklin is full of rich history and is home of America´s first public lending library, the Franklin Public Library, which houses the original Benjamin Franklin collection of books.
Horace Mann, the father of American public education, was born in Franklin and the nation´s oldest one-room school still in operation, The Red Brick School, is located here. Also located here is the Boston Archdiocese´s largest catholic parish, comprised of 15,000 members.
Franklin is ideally situated within the "Golden Triangle" of the metropolitan areas of Boston, Providence, RI, and Worcester and is within easy access to the cultural, educational and recreational facilities offered there. Franklin´s industrial base is comprised of manufacturing and retail trade and is home to a number of national and regional firms such as EMC and Putnam Investments.
