Ashland is located in the Greater Boston Massachusetts Area and enjoys a connection to Boston´s excellent air, rail and highway systems. Originating as a rural village in the early 1700´s, Ashland was once home to the Natick Indians and was originally known as "Unionville".  The growth of Ashland was directly related to the expansion of the railroad from Boston to Albany in the 1800´s, but Ashland retained its image as a slow-growing, rural town until the 1900´s.  The post-war years of the 50´s saw the emergence of Ashland as a Boston residential suburb and the scattered farms and open spaces gave way to the establishment of many new residential areas, shopping centers, condominiums and adult living communities.

Being situated halfway between Boston and Worcester, Ashland is easily accessed via the interstate highway system and the Massachusetts Turnpike.  The original starting point of the Boston Marathon, Ashland is also home to the invention of the electric clock which was invented here in 1916 by Henry Warren.   The Ashland Reservoir, the site of Ashland State Park, was constructed here in the early 1900´s.
